Health Cost Estimation of Traffic-Related Air Pollution and Assessing the Pollution Reduction Potential of Zero-Emission Vehicles in Toronto, Canada

چکیده

Fossil fuel vehicles, emitting air toxics into the atmosphere, impose a heavy burden on economy through additional health care expenses and ecological degradation. Air pollution is responsible for millions of deaths chronic acute problems every year, such as asthma obstructive pulmonary disease. The fossil-fuel-based transportation system releases tons toxic gases atmosphere putting human at risk, especially in urban areas. This analysis aims to determine economic environmental impacts caused by Highway 401 traffic. Due high volume vehicles driving Toronto corridor, there an annual release 3771 tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). These emissions are mainly emitted onsite combustion gasoline diesel fuel. integration electric hydrogen shows maximum reductions 405–476 g CO2e per vehicle-kilometer. Besides these emissions, also large amount hazardous pollutants. To examine impact health, mass concentrations criteria pollutants PM2.5 NOx passenger commercial trucks were determined using MOVES2014b software. Then, dispersion model (AERMOD) was used find concentration different receptor’s location. increased risk issues calculated hazard ratios from literature. Finally, cost traffic estimated be CAD 416 million year value statistical life, which significantly higher than climate change costs 55 due pollution.

A Cohort Study of Traffic-Related Air Pollution and Mortality in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

BACKGROUND Chronic exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) may contribute to premature mortality, but few studies to date have addressed this topic. OBJECTIVES In this study we assessed the association between TRAP and mortality in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. METHODS We collected nitrogen dioxide samples over two seasons using duplicate two-sided Ogawa passive diffusion samplers at 1...

Assessing the health benefits of air pollution reduction for children.

Benefit-cost analyses of environmental regulations are increasingly mandated in the United States. Evaluations of criteria air pollutants have focused on benefits and costs associated with adverse health effects. Children are significantly affected by the health benefits of improved air quality, yet key environmental health policy analyses have not previously focused specifically on children's ...

Health benefits of traffic-related air pollution reduction in different socioeconomic groups: the effect of low-emission zoning in Rome.

OBJECTIVES Few studies have assessed the effects of policies aimed to reduce traffic-related air pollution. The aims of this study were to evaluate the impact, in terms of air quality and health effects, of two low-emission zones established in Rome in the period 2001-2005 and to assess the impact by socioeconomic position (SEP) of the population. METHODS We evaluated the effects of the inter...

Motor vehicles, air pollution, and public health.

Over the past decade, an increasing body of scientific evidence has accrued associating outdoor air pollution with certain types of cancer. Specifically, two major large prospective epidemiological studies first published in the early to mid-1990s and, in the case of one study, recently confirmed with a larger data base, found an association between exposure to particulate air pollution and lun...

Traffic-related air pollution and brain development

Automotive traffic-related air pollution (TRP) imposes an increasing health burden with global urbanization. Gestational and early child exposure to urban TRP is associated with higher risk of autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia, as well as low birth weight. While cardio-respiratory effects from exposure are well documented, cognitive effects are only recently becoming widely recognized...
